Lake Mungo, N.S.W.

Lake Mungo is a dry lake about 760km west of Sydney. It was inhabited for thousands of years by Indigenous Australians, but due to changes in climate it gradually dried up. It is famous for being the site of the oldest known human remains in Australia. “Mungo Man” is considered to be between 25,000 and 50,000 years old. “Mungo Woman”, the partially cremated remains of another Indigenous person from the reason, is close to 40,000 years old. Stone tools even older than these remains have been found in the sand dunes that lie close to the lake.
